평화의 선물
조지 H.W. 부시 전 미국 대통령의 부인 바바라 부시가 죽기 전 아들에게 말했습니다. “나는 예수님을 믿고 그분은 나의 구주시니 죽음에 대한 두려움이 없단다.” 이 놀랍고 확신에 찬 진술은 그녀의 믿음이 강하고 뿌리가 깊었다는 것을 보여줍니다. 그녀는 죽음에 직면했을 때에도 예수님을 아는 데서 오는 하나님의 평화의 선물을 경험한 것입니다. 1세기 때 예루살렘에 거주한 시므온 또한 예수님 때문에 아주 깊은 평화를 경험했습니다. 마리아와 요셉이 새로 태어난 남자아이를 위해 율법이 정한 할례를 행하려고 아기 예수님을 성전에 데려왔을 때, 시므온도 성령에 감동되어 그리로 갔습니다. 비록 시므온에 대해서는 많이 알려져 있지 않지만, 누가복음의 설명을 통해 그는 오실 메시아를 성실하게 기다리는 의롭고 경건한 하나님의
특별한 사람이었으며, “성령이 그 위에 계셨던”(누가복음 2:25) 사람이었음을 알 수 있습니다. 그러나 시므온은 예수님을 보기 전까지는 온전한 성취감을 의미하는 ‘샬롬’(평화)을 경험하지 못했습니다. 시므온은 예수님을 팔에 안고 찬양의 노래를 부르며 하나님 안에서 온전한 만족을 표현했습니다. “주재여 이제는 말씀하신 대로 종을 평안히 놓아 주시는도다 내 눈이 주의 구원을 보았사오니 이는 만민 앞에 예비하신 것이요”(29-31절). 그는 온 세상의 미래의 소망을 미리 보았기 때문에 평화를 맛볼 수 있었습니다. 약속된 구세주이신 예수님의 삶과 죽음, 그리고 부활을 기념할 때 우리는 하나님이 주시는 평화의 선물로 기뻐할 수 있습니다.

THE GIFT OF PEACE
“I believe in Jesus and He is my Savior, and I have no fear of death,” said Barbara Bush, the wife of former US President George H. W. Bush, to her son before she died. This incredible and confident statement suggests a strong and deep-rooted faith. She experienced God’s gift of peace that comes from knowing Jesus, even when faced with death.
Simeon, a resident of Jerusalem during the first century, also experienced profound peace because of Jesus. Moved by the Holy Spirit, Simeon went to the temple when Mary and Joseph brought baby Jesus to be circumcised as required by the law for a newborn boy. Although not much is known about Simeon, from Luke’s description one can tell he was a special man of God, just and devout, waiting faithfully for the coming Messiah, and “the Holy Spirit was on him” (LUKE 2:25). Yet Simeon did not experience shalom (peace), a deep sense of completeness, until he saw Jesus. While holding Jesus in his arms, Simeon broke into a song of praise, expressing full satisfaction in God: “You may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations” (VV. 29–31). He had peace because he foresaw the future hope of the whole world. As we celebrate the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, the promised Savior, may we rejoice in God’s gift of peace. ESTERA PIROSCA ESCOBAR
