이름에 담긴 뜻
하나님의 시간에 맞추어 우리 아들 코피가 금요일에 태어났습니다. 아들의 이름은 금요일에 태어난 사내아이라는 뜻입니다. 우리는 그 이름을 가나 사람 친구인, 외아들을 잃어버린 목사의 이름을 따라 지었습니다. 그는 우리 코피를 위해 쉬지 않고 기도합니다. 우리에게 큰 영광입니다. 뒤에 숨겨진 이야기를 모르면 이름에 담긴 중요한 뜻을 놓치기가 쉽습니다. 누가복음 3장에서 우리는 요셉의 조상 가운데 있는 한 이름에 관한 놀라운 세부사항을 발견합니다. 족보는 요셉의 가계가 아담에게까지, 아니 하나님에게까지 거슬러 올라갑니다(38절). 31절을 보면 “그 위는 나단이요, 그 위는 다윗이요.” 나단? 아주 흥미롭습니다. 역대상 3장 5절에서 우리는 나단이 밧세바에게서 태어났다는 것을 보게 됩니다. 다윗이 밧세바의 아들을 나단이라고 이름 지은 것이 우연의 일치일까요? 배경 이야기를 기억하십시오. 밧세바는 결코 다윗의 아내가 되어서는 안 되었습니다. 선지자였던 다른 나단은 왕이 밧세바를 빼앗고 그녀의 남편을 살해하기 위해 자신의 권력을 남용한 것에 대해 용감히 맞섰습니다(사무엘하 12장 참조). 다윗은 선지자의 직설적인 질책을 받아들이고 그의 끔찍한 범죄를 회개했습니다. 시간이 지나 회복되면서 그는 자신의 아들의 이름을 나단이라고 지었을 것입니다. 그가 밧세바의 아들이었으며, 예수님의 이 땅의 아버지인 요셉의 조상 중 하나가 되었다는 것이 아주 적절하지 않습니까(누가복음 3:23). 성경에서 우리는 잘 읽히지 않는 족보에 있는 모호한 이름 속에서조차 모든 것에 엮여 있는 하나님의 은혜를 계속 발견합니다. 하나님의 은혜는 어디에나 있습니다.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?
In God’s timing, our son Kofi was born on a Friday, which is exactly what his name means—boy born on Friday. We named him after a Ghanaian friend of ours, a pastor whose only son died. He prays for our Kofi constantly. We’re deeply honored. It’s easy to miss the significance in a name if you don’t know the story behind it. In Luke 3, we find a fascinating detail about a name in the ancestry of Joseph. The genealogy traces Joseph’s line backward all the way to Adam and even to God (V. 38). In verse 31 we read: “the son of
Nathan, the son of David.” Nathan? That’s interesting. In 1 Chronicles 3:5 we learn that Nathan was born to Bathsheba. Is it coincidence that David named Bathsheba’s child Nathan? Recall the backstory. Bathsheba was never supposed to be David’s wife. Another Nathan—the prophet—bravely confronted the king for abusing his authority to exploit Bathsheba and murder her husband (SEE 2 SAMUEL 12). David accepted the prophet’s point-blank rebuke and repented of his horrific offenses. With the healing passage of time, he would name his
son Nathan. How appropriate that this was Bathsheba’s son, and that he would be one of the ancestors of Joseph, Jesus’ earthly dad (LUKE 3:23). In the Bible, we keep finding God’s grace woven into everything— even into an obscure name in a seldom-read genealogy. God’s grace is everywhere. TIM GUSTAFSON
